Chromelining your E38 headlights -- 1995-1998
Only takes a couple of hours -- and readily availabile tools!

This is a great, inexpensive project for those who want to brighten up the front end of an E38 without going through the expense of upgrading to the 1999-2001 headlights.

Tools needed:

- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver -- a couple of differnt sizes (thin, wide...)
- T20 Torx Driver
- Grey primer & Chrome/Silver paint
- a little bit of time and patience...

Step 1: Open the hood...
Step 2: Here's the headlight assembly before starting. Notice the black plastic trim around the headlights -- that's what we're going to change!
Step 3: Remove the lower piece of painted trim by push sideways towards the center of the car. It may be stuck, so you may have to carefully pry it towards the center from the outside edge.
Step 4: See?
Step 5: It's hard to see in the picture, but use a narrow flat head screwdriver to unlatch the headlight assembly from the fender -- simply slides towards center of vehicle (to the left in this case).
Step 6: Disconnect wiring harness from rear side of headlight assembly -- pulls up and off in less than a second.
Step 7: Remove two screws with phillips head screwdriver (located on top (both sides) of headlight assembly).
Step 8: Use phillips head screwdriver hole indicated in picture -- unscrew until loose to remove side marker.
Step 9: Pull sidemarker forward to the front of the car (pops right out) -- it may need some coaxing.
Step 10: Remove two torx screws located at bottom of headlight assembly using T20 Torx Driver. You may need a flashlight (they're hidden pretty well).
Step 11: Remove headlight assembly. Youch -- big hole!
Step 12: Pry the gasket off of the headlight assembly with flat head screwdriver. The one on the side is difficult -- work with it. Easy to break it too.
Step 13: Remove the torx screws from botton of headlight assembly to gain access to clips (using T20 Torx Driver).
Step 14: With piece removed...
Step 15: Pry off clips (top and bottom) with flat head screwdriver that hold lens onto assembly (usually 5 or 6 clips).
Step 16: Lens and gasket removed from headlight assembly...
Step 17: You can remove gasket from lens if you need to replace them -- otherwise, if they look good, re-use the ones you have.
Step 18: Remove the three (3) torx screws that hold on the plastic housing that we're about to chromeline. Pops right off.
Step 19: Removed... (notice the clear plastic circular pieces -- these will have to be removed as well).
Step 20: From the back side. Pop the clear plastic piece out at top first, than the bottom comes out easily.
Step 21: Here's the piece we're going to paint -- I used Rustoleum Automotive Primer and Duplicolor Aluminum High Heat Block Paint (dries Silver in color).
Step 22: A closer picture of the primer and paint cans.
Step 23: I used two coats of primer... no need to do back side
Step 24: Then two coats of paint... I let each coat dry enough till it wasn't tacky anymore. Time depends on weather conditions...
Step 25: Here's a picture of the painted plastic piece installed back into the headlight assembly (without glass lens)...
Step 26: Reintall the springs by connecting on the glass side first. It's easier this way.
Step 27: ...and then a picture with glass lens and springs reinstalled.
Step 28: Assembly reinstalled in your vehicle...
