Bluetooth

An open specification for seamless wireless short-range (up to 10 meters) communications of data and voice between both mobile and stationary devices. For instance, it specifies how mobile phones, computers and PDAs interconnect with each other, with computers, office equipment, cameras, etc.

With regard to your BMW, it allows any Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, regardless of the manufacturer, to wirelessly integrate with your BMW's onboard navigation system, steering wheel controls, microphone and speakers.
