Jeff 1997,
To pull the factory radio you need a "radio tool" aval from Bav. Auto., BMP design among others. about 15.00. They look like allen head drivers. You might be able to use a small allen wrench(fit to match but sometimes I've seen the heads round out) Look for the ser. # then call a dealer. Tell the parts dept you need a code. I say parts because you want to set up a "nice" relationship with them. I've found they like to get new customers more than the service dept does. Your results may vary. Ohh, did you look all over in the glove box, trunk, center console, owners manual? the # is either 5 or 6 numbers ie: 13645 Turn the key to #1 position, turn on the radio and put in the code. You only get 3 tries before the anti-theft says no. If you don't get it leave key on for 1hr. and try again.
Reset tool aval. from same stores and from PEAKE (they make the ones BA sells) look around, I see a big price range.
Cluster might have been "worked on" and this is why it won't work, now. Did you check the temp sensor connections? Pull the lower rear seat and mat. Check the sending unit plug(s) It is poss. that a plug is loose behind the cluster. If you pull it don't turn the ign. past #1 or you set fault code. Yes it is poss. to get it out without pulling the str. wheel.
I don't do convr at all.
Good luck.
