There are a number of things that can cause this problem with our inline 6 cylinder engine's. Number one on this list is the crank case vent valve. The tube that leads from this valve back to the crankcase can become restricted and not allow oil to drain from the valve back to where it belongs, along with that the dipstick tube it'self can become clogged and create the same problem. I would suggest that you purchase the 4 hose's that go with the ccv valve and the valve itself and replace all those parts. You will need all of that hardware because you'll have to break the hoses anyway when removing the ccv valve. Another spot to look at is the valve cover gasket--any leaks there will allow air to enter the system and oil can be pulled into the cylinders that way as well--would be a good thing to get all of this out of the way at the same time. Valve cover gasket--ccv valve and the 4 hose's that go with it--and since your that far along--the best mod ever for our cars is to replace the Vanos seals--that one mod will make your car run like it was new again--it really brings the timeing of these engines back in to the specs that were designed in to them.
Go over to the right side of the page under forums and click on to the Vanos forum and read--there will be lots of info there and a how to, on replaceing the Vanos seals, that will also show you how to replace the valve cover gasket.
The problem I have with oil usage is different than the one you have--I hope--my problem is that the valve seals have gone south
I have made an oil catch can that has introduced vacuum into the crankcase and has elimanated the problem. Do the suggested work
as advised above--if that doesn't stop and contain the problem
come back and I'll post my DIY on the oil catch can and try to eaplain how and why it works.
