Subject: ACS replica pedal install - gas pedal removal (long)

My apologies, Magnum and everyone… there is no “I” in team. But there is a “me.” I am afraid I was just too impatient to wait for a group buy on the AC Schnitzer replica aluminum pedals. The auction link you originally provided? Yeah, couldn’t wait, I “bought it now” the next morning. My apologies for not waiting for the group buy!

My wife said “you can’t even see the pedals… and no one else will either!” (We’ve had this discussion before… “You can’t even see the M-Parallels. You can’t even see the clear turns.” She does have a point.) I tried to explain that her E39 came stock with a nice M-dead pedal, and clearly I needed something to dress up the E38. (Her car also came stock with M-Parallels and clear turns!) I donno what did it, but the wife gave me the green light, so I had to act.

Anyway, I was able to install the pedals using your hints, but it took me almost four hours, much longer than I expected. As you said, the dead pedal was a walk in the park. The brake pedal just requires double checking the holes so you don’t get too close to the edge. Drilling through the metal isn’t bad. Don’t forget your eye protection!

The gas pedal, however, was the hassle. For those of you about to take on the install, feel the back of the pedal and the difficulty of getting the washer and nut back there will become clear. I used a Post-It note to hold the nut/screw at the tip of my finger to get them into place, and it took many tries. I had a mirror, a head light, a magnet on a stick to retrieve things, and I am not too tall nor are my hands too large, so I thought I could do this install. I gave up on the top two washers and didn’t tighten everything down much, but the pedals looked great!

Now I have revisited the project and removed the gas pedal. Total time to remove and re-install this pedal, about an hour. But I don’t know if I would have ever gotten everything as tight as I wished without taking the pedal off the car.

Before:

After:

Using a Post-It note the first time around:

The back of the gas pedal, notice that one washer will not fit:

To remove the gas pedal, start by locating the tab at the back of the pedal at the floor. It's in the center of the pedal. Press it down to the floor until it snaps, but do not try to remove it as it is affixed to the pedal:

Push on two outer tabs from the front of the pedal, straight towards the engine. They will not snap out of place, but with pressure on them, wiggle the pedal left/right and pull upwards:

Middle tab is the first one you popped out, the outside two locations where you need to press are circled:

As you can see, I scuffed mine up a bit, but it went back in place just fine:

After you get the base of the pedal off, rotate the pedal towards the driver's seat until the top can slide off the linkage.

Putting it all back is very easy. Some lithium grease on the top connection can't hurt.
