According to the inflation calculator (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/), $75,000 in 1996 (~E38 pricing)is equal to $101,922 in 2008 - so the price of an F02 really isn't that far out of line.

Is a Z4 expensive? When compared to a Pontiac Solstice..sure. However, there is a day/night difference in nearly every aspect of quality, and especially drivability! I travel a lot for work and I dread every injection-molded-dash equipped lexmark-printed plood containing rental car I get stuck with! The fact that cars like the Pacifica aren't exactly profit-bearing shows that for real substance, real money must be involved.

If you haven't had a chance, take a tour of the BMW factory nearest you (or PM me and I can point you to the recent Discovery Channel episode where they toured the Z4 plant, vs. the one where they toured a Camaro plant).. you'll see where your hard earned dollars go when you buy a BMW!

Oh, as far as BMW trying to prop up resale values... that's not a bad thing, since the best way for them to do that is to improve long-term quality! I personally feel that the biggest factor in higher resale value will be the complementary scheduled maintenance program, since it assures anyone buying a 4ish year old Bimmer that it has been well-maintained, thus eliminating a large variable.
