I recently bought a used 2002 525i wagon that has the same problem. Turns out that the wiper motor works, but the arm does not move because the spring loaded pin is not in the hole. If you can move the rear wiper easily with your hand you have the same problem.

My fix: turn the ignition on, but don't start the engine. Turn the rear wiper on. Put the parking brake on and put the transmission in reverse, this will make the wiper motor run continuously instead of on interval. Slowly and carefully move the rear wiper from left to right. At some point it should catch and start to move by itself.

If you don't hear the wiper motor run, you have a different problem, e.g.
- Glass hatch not fully closed
- Blown fuse
- Broken wiper motor

Once it works it will keep working, but when I open and close the glass rear hatch the pin won't go into the hole and I have to repeat the procedure. Looks like an alignment problem, but I don't see any way to adjust it. If someone knows, please post.
