CPS (camshaft position sensor, speed sensor) replacement on a '98 BMW 750iL

Parts
CPS (speed sensor) BMW part # 12 14 1 433 263

Tools
6mm socket
5mm hex on a 3/8" socket
3/8" socket wrench
philips screwdriver
flat blade screwdriver

Time required
Approximately 30 minutes

Procedure
The V12 engine has a single CPS sensor, located on the driver's side of the engine, slightly below and behind the distributor cap wiring.

To get started, remove the air filter cover on the driver's side of the engine to get it out of the way. The hose clamps take a 6mm screwdriver socket. Removing the entire airbox will give you even more room (highly recommended, though I didn't do it on this one).

Then loosen the hose clamps (6mm socket) securing the MAF hoses to the engine, and get them out of the way.

Remove the four screws on top of the engine cover to lift it off.

This photo shows the CPS sensor, taken from below where the MAF hoses would normally be. The sensor is held in place by a single 5mm hex screw.

The arrow shows the connection for the end of the CPS sensor wire.

Push in the metal retaining clip to release it from the engine.

The upper arrow show the CPS sensor wire as it goes down the driver's side of the engine. The lower arrow shows where you will be looking to locate the actual CPS sensor and it's 5mm hex screw.

Position your wrench below and behind the distributor wiring to find the CPS sensor. Take care not to drop the hex screw as you remove it from the engine. Once removed, wiggle the CPS sensor out of the hole in the engine, then fish the attached wire from the upper part of the engine to fully remove it.

The 5mm hex screw that holds the CPS sensor in the engine. Note the blue threadlock on the threads.

The old CPS sensor removed from the engine.

The new CPS sensor. Install it back in the hole in the engine, secure it with the 5mm hex screw, fish the wiring harness back up the top of the engine and connect the plug to finish. Replace the engine cover and the MAF hoses and air filter and you're done!
