gears are bad then there is a disconnect. I guess the sensor in the diff sends the signal to the speedo which uses the electrical signal to produce a rotational value in the gears. Probably that little motor on the speeedo board. So if the speedo and odo do not work, it may be the sender in the top right side of the differential at the rear of the car or the electrical connection up to and including the speedo/odo unit.
