I expected them to cost less in Europe. A lot of the guys on the E38 Forum (same V8 engine as your E39) have had reasonable success with aftermarket catalytic converters from Magnaflow and DEC. Feel free to cross-post your question on the E38 forum, too, and let us know what you do.
