Been a while. 86 735i 134k mile suddenly started running real bad and now it won't even run.
Coil, battery, plugs, cap and rotor were all new. The only anomaly I can think of is that I drove 1200 miles in May instead of my usual 150 or so.
I've been poking around while I'm waiting for a full day to attack it and this morning, while it was running rough, I noticed that pushing the AFM vane in a little ways helped it stay steady at about 800 or so. Popped of the AFM and gave it a clean (Just wiped out the gunk with a rag, no solvents) and put it back on and now it won't even run.
Will be checking plugs later today and if I can't find it this weekend I'll have to get a fuel pressure tester so I can check the regulator.

Symptoms:
Driving along at 25, come to stop sign and Idle starts getting ragged, gave it a little gas and it tried to die, crept along at idle and pulled out of traffic, left car running, stuck head under hood to look for loose connections, didn't see anything obvious. Opened throttle body and it revved fine. Got back in and tried to pull out and it went crappy again. Gave it a few minutes and it started running fine again.
After that it became hard to get started and I haven't driven it since. Had a friend over yesterday squirting starting fluid, didn't seem to make any difference, then after a while it started running normally and we couldn't replicate the problem.
