1. When I start the car, sometimes I get a loud grinding/ringing sound. Is my starter ready to go?

I had the same issue. Changed the starter with a rebuilt unit and it's fine now.

3. Erratic idle that sometimes fluctuates more when I turn on the lights or climate controls. Electrical problem/vacuum leak?

Check battery voltage at idle. It should be > 13.8 volts.
Also try disconnecting the o2 sensor. Does it idle better?

4. The 35-pin connector to my Motronic unit (the box above my glove compartment, I presume)

That is the ABS module. Your Motronic is behind the passenger side front speaker.

6. There are two modules under the steering wheel.

The one with the green wires should be the OBC relay box. It's used in conjunction with the OBC code function. A search will give you lots of hits.
