Subject: A new E38.org Heater Core Hero checks in - with valuable information...

Mark from Seattle was kind enough to send me a note after he finished the heater core on his E38. He had some valuable information to add (Moderator's note: See earlier Heater Core Repair thread):

David,

I just finished the heater core in my 740iL. Wow, what a a job! You weren't kidding about it taking 30 hours.

Thanks very much for posting your notes. They are an excellent addition to the ETK/TIS and filled in a large number of gaps in the factory service information. I only have 2 minor suggestions if you post a 2nd edition and/or consolidate your notes into a single document:

1. It is not necessary to remove the shifter knob. I couldn't get the knob off and found it was pretty easy to feed the shifter plate through the bezel & console hole.

2. The latest Behr heater core is solid aluminum with a plastic shroud. U-shaped bayonetts are used to secure the manifold pipes to the heater core. Bayonetts are inserted (tapped in) from the outside/top of the heater core before it is installed in the car. A new manifold is required for cars built before 6/96. Behr doesn't give you enough foam insulation so I had to remove some foam from the old heater core and glue it on.

Your suggestion to take pictures to document wire routing/tie straps was very good. I refered to your pictures and mine several times.

Thanks Again, Mark

best,

Dave
