Check that the relays are fully seated. I think I had a 'car would die' issue because the main relay on my E28 had spade connectors inside the mount that did not engage fully. I finally pulled the relay unit, pulled out the wiring and tightened the spade connections. Glad I used a new relay because it will be a number of years before those lose their grip.

The electrical systems of these cars are critical. Anytime you are working on the vehicle and open a connector, remove ground lugs and such it is highly recommended to clean those parts for a good electrical connection. You can do this with Caig's Deoxit D5S spray (www.caig.com for info and available at Guitar Center in the US) or with fine sand paper. It is amazing what good clean electrical connections can do for these old beasts.
