installed in the ECU that is advancing the timing? Does it ping when you run premium grade fuel, too? Maybe the combustion chambers are carboned up? I remember than in the mid 80s my dad's 325e was called in to the dealer under warranty to have walnut shells blast the combustion chambers clean. Pinging is usually timing or fuel related.
My 89 735il detonated until I changed the ECU out and it cleared up. You can buy them used for under $50 on Ebay if you are patient.
