I am in New Zealand. The local dealer is a small, multi marque type deal.
The BMW tech is a young guy, I kind-of get the feeling he has been thrown in at the deep end and has been sent of the courses but hasn't had the experience yet... hence the case of 80 hrs to find a bad pvc valve. They do think its electrical.
I picked the car up today and called into an exhaust shop on the way home. I did express my concern of perhaps having to buy some cats and it not being the problem, they said one sign is .... they may rattle. Something is rattling under there, if its the cat/s, they said they will definitely be shot.
Being a "small town", he did mention that the local BMW dealer had also sent cars to them with suspected clog cats. The last one was a 540 as well... but it wasn't the problem ?!?
I have also read elsewhere that if a cylinder/bank is misfiring, the computer will take over and start pulling fuel from that cylinder/bank...to protect the cats.
If it has been doing that (and the cat is blocked) when replaced, does the computer re-adapt itself quickly or does it need human intervention?
Thanks
Chris
