Hi Greg,

P1397 is an exhaust camshaft position sensor fault code. You need to replace this sensor. Be sure to buy a dealership part. The aftermarket sensors have not been working. Also get the associated O-ring. It’s easy to replace the sensor. You need a 5mm Allen wrench to remove one bolt. This sensor is on the vanos exhaust side. Here’s a picture of it from the double vanos repair procedure. Replacing it will resolve your fault code. You might have other issues like a vacuum leak. You can start by replacing the sensor and see what happens.
