Hello - I own a 2003 530i (M54/dual VANOS) with 105K miles on it. I have recently begun to hear a metallic rattling/squeaking sound but it only occurs when I start the car first thing in the morning or when the engine is cold. One morning I didn't have the car in the garage over night and it was a chilly morning and the sound was even louder/worse/more noticeable than usual. It's only really noticeable when the engine is idling but that might be because the noise of increased rpm's may mask the sound somewhat. I've opened the hood when the sound occurs and it seems like the noise is coming from the upper front part of the engine in the VANOS area but its hard to be sure. I've not noticed any degradation of engine performance but perhaps it’s because the VANOS seals are only in the early stages of going bad. Please let me know if this sounds like a VANOS symptom.
