Actually...

BMW makes a whole kit for the rear main seal and the flange gasket that includes a new flange and new hardware. Daniels in Allentown, Penna 610 820 2988 (Brian) should have one in stock (with some of my dirty finger prints all over it). I just returned it this Tuesday as I didn't need it when I did the 5spd swap this past weekend.

It may be a way to ensure you have the seal square and on a good new surface. The aluminum around that flange can be easily nicked causing it to leak.
