As an industrial mechanic I have LOTS of experience with seals.
Spring side or open side goes to the sealing side. I've seem many installed backwards.
I've used both styles but have prefered the 'spring' style, not because I've seen failures in them but because I'm old, stubborn, and go with what I know works. My supplier however says that the 'new' style lasts up to 7 times longer. Both have springs. One is imbedded in the material the other can be seen.
Biggest cause of leaks is no or little assembly lubrication. Lube the shaft and seal with lots of oil or grease and be carefull to insert using ONLY the outer ring. Any deformity at all of the outer face from striking it of even pressing it will cause the seal to fail.

I don't know the same things that you don't know.
