I tried an iPhone 3G (not mine) with a TCU from a 2007 X3 that I installed in my 2005 M3. TCU part number 84.10.9115729 (made by Continental.

iPhone 3 pairs, transfers phone number (200+) but there is an echo when talking on the phone (bad at both ends of the call). Increasing bluetooth volume on the iPhone to 80-90% seems to help but I don't know if that is a *real* fix as I only could try it for a few minutes.
