Subject: 1998 E39 Wipers totally stopped

Hello,

The wipers on my 1998 528i (non auto rain-sensing) have stopped working. The washer fluid pump still works.

I've tried the following DIY repairs to no avail:

1. Checked all the fuses in the glove compartment and trunk. they're all good.

2. Changed the double relay K11 located in the E-box below the air filter on the passenger's side of the car. No effect.

3. Changed the wiper switch in the steering wheel. No effect.

Thinking it might be the wiper motor, I measured the voltages going to wiper motor with the engine on. There's a 4 pin cable that hooks to the base of the motor. After unplugging the cable and measuring across the terminals in various pairwise combinations, I see either zero volts or +/-3.7V. These values do not change with the wiper blade control settings, indicating a problem upstream of the motor.

I'm starting to think it could be the general module, which a real PITA. Are there any other things I can check? Is there a way to check the GM, short of getting another one?
