Subject: Re: I use a V1 mounted low on the windshield

Good point. I know the "official" Valentine position is as high up the windshield as possible, and most V1 afficiandos espouse this with religious fervor. However, other radar experts have a different view, based on considering what bands you need most protection from, among other things. Vehicle height, or windshield size should be a consideration. The non-Valentine consensus seems to be mid to low windshield. Most Valentine installs end up having to be one side or the other of the mirror, which is less than optimum.
I use just a Whistler 1730, hard-wired directly to an ignition-switched source at the fuse panel, and sitting on the dash ahead of the storage/NAV bin - essentially as low on the windshield as you can get. Even this modestly-priced unit, mounted like that, picks up laser reflections from other vehicles nicely, and has allowed me to react in time at least once (curving 4-lane with a bridge abuttment concealing the laser gun operator until the last second). Having no visual distractions around the rear-view mirror area is more important to me anyway, even if I were losing some detection ability.
