BMW made it way too "special." That's the polite way of saying that BMW packed it fancy electronic toys and expensive hardware that drove up the cost of the car. Nissan Z-Car enthusiasts blame Nissan for this same problem with the 1990-1996 300ZX (other examples are the Toyota Supra, and the Mazda RX-7). All of these cars packed on the pounds, gained expensive and exotic powertrains and hardware. Prices went through the roof, and out of reach of their traditional fan base.

Unlike Nissan, BMW eventually offered a few more RWD coupe choices for those who felt the new for 2004 6-series was too expensive: the 1-series coupe and convertible, the 3-series coupe and convertible, the M-roadster and M-Coupe, as well as the Z4 coupe and roadster.

When Nissan killed off the Z coupe and convertible, the only rear drive vehicle left in the lineup was the 240SX. That was gone too for the 1998 model year. Only the Z-car returned in 2002, in coupe and convertible format. At least this time they made it relatively affordable.
