Subject: Despite the price differences, I was looking at it like this....

The 8-series occupied the 6-series place as BMW's sole large luxury coupe offering. Likewise, when the 8-series was cancelled around 1998 or 1999, along comes the Z8 roadster, powered by the S62 borrowed from the E39 M5 (that came along a year later, or did the M5 borrow the S62 from the Z8? who knows?). The Z8 didn't stay long -- it left production around 2003. At around 100k, the Z8 was very expensive to build and not many people bought them. Then the current 6-series was introduced for the 2004 model year, and sold for a little more than half what the Z8 roadster sold for. Two years later, hello M6!

I'm hoping that, assuming the new M1 is built, that it's offered with a turbo engine exclusive to the car. Otherwise, people will see little reason to choose the M1 over the garden-variety 6-series, which starts at around 2/3 the cost of the presumed north of the $100K-plus pricetag on the M1. I'm sure BMW is probably aware of this scenario. Also, there have been rumors of a twin-turbo M5 running around BMW's proving grounds, easily identified by dual makeshift raised hoodscoops and matching hoodbumps. This is rumored to be a test mule, as the next generation 5-series and M5 are right around the corner within the next two years. You could almost time your watch by BMW's relatively prompt seven-year product cycles.
