Subject: not sure - as with many repairs, the labor is the $$$ part

Generally, tensioners and guides are not big $ parts, it's all the stuff you have to take off to get to them that makes the job cost a lot.

Some engines do have known problem timing chain guides or tensioners. For example, the 97-01 or 02 (not quite sure what the cutoff year is) Jaguar AJ-V8. It used a failure prone tensioner from the factory, and it is a known issue on those cars, and recommended to go ahead and replace them with the updated tensioner that is available. It's at least a $1000 job to have it done.

However, I have yet to see any evidence that the M62 and M62TU (or even the old M60) engines have a known "they all do that" or "nearly all of them do that" problem with timing chain guides or tensioners.
