The premium sound system (DSP) was the only option that would require using Digital Coax cable. The cable went from your DSP amp to the CD changers.
A couple years after X5 production, BMW stopped using this connection and just used the analog inputs on your radio / tuner. I'm not sure what year they made this change - perhaps model year 2002 and later??
