Subject: No, the car will not control a CD or DVD changer volume...

Here is a very quick overview of how things work...

Original system with the DSP installed:
The radio is the audio switching source for everything but CD changer (tape, AM/FM, telephone, nav instructions)
The radio ignores its own CD audio input source
When you select CD, the radio tells the DSP amp to switch to its SPDIF digital input
When you select any other source on the radio, the radio tells the DSP amp to switch back to its standard analog audio input source
The radio ignores volume, fader, and balance commands from the car
The DSP is the component that responds to volume, fader, and balance controls
The radio feeds a full-volume, line level signal to the DSP amp

To-Be system with DSP removed and aftermarket amp
The radio is now the switching source for all components, including CD
The radio switches and equalizes AM/FM, CD changer, tape, nav instructions, and telephone through its inputs on the two 10-pin plugs
When you select CD, the radio simply switches its input source, it does not tell the amp to do anything
The radio responds to volume, fader, and balance commands from the car to affect audio source levels
The radio feeds a variable-level line output signal to the external amp

So, the summary of all of the above is that the radio is an essential component of the system. You can not bypass the radio without somehow creating the pre-amp functions (volume, fader, balance, bass, and trebble) externally for the CD changer. I still suspect the analog cable you have running from the CDC to the radio. I would just eat the loss and buy the 65.12-8 383 857. It is 100% correctly pre-wired, so it should just plug in and work. That would eliminate the doubt about wiring issues. Also, try sending Stu and Wiggi emails to ask them how they did their stuf.
