Question about upper steering shaft

A friend of mine has an '00 (I think?) z3 and the other day she calls me up in a panic saying that her steering wheel is spinning free and not turning the wheels. After she had it towed to a dealer they told her that the upper steering shaft had broken and would need to be replaced. They are charging her 600 bucks (including an alignment) so I told her to jump on it.

I was just curious to see if any of you had heard of this happening. Did a search for "steering shaft" that didn't get any results. It just seems like such a strange thing to happen.
