I am familiar with oil analysis and its use in industrial settings. I also am familiar with the JOAP, indeed the man sitting in the office next to me here at the VA was a maintenance chief on F 16s and B 1Bs. We talk shop all the time and work on cars and trucks together

When you are changing multiple 100s of gallons of lubricants it is cost effective. I think having oil analysis done on a consumer level is a bit much. BMWs are precise machines, but they are not F 16s, nor are they bulldozers, at least not in the literal sense, though I have plowed through snow in a 733.

The cost would hardly justify the effort even if it doubled the change interval at the consumer level. I guess one could track the usage pattern, say for the last 3 months I have been mostly highway driving, so I can wait a bit longer, or get an analysis done but for most drivers it is just easier to set a standard schedule of 3 to 5 k depending on use.

I change my oil after a weekend track event even if it was changed the Friday before.

Any given car will have mixed use between short trips and highway use and changing the oil 3-5k covers the bases. Even if you go with the Amsoil idea of double the mileage on a normally driven passenger car that is still just 6-10k miles, not 25 to 35k.

As for the engines I have seen flush and damages I know one went through 4 filters during the process, but if the sludge hits the passage before the filter, it makes little difference.

I guess it breaks down to the fact that I am from the old school of doing it right the first time. Like I said, if the engine had not been touched, I’d give it a whirl and see how goes it, worst case is you are right back where you started. But with the new head, no way, no how. It is off goes the good head and in goes a new bottom end.

The M30 is tank tough. I have had them go 600k on the bottom end, usually with 2-3 heads along the way. But if there was any sign of weakness in the bottom, it got redone as well.

I have a lot of respect for the BMW engineering process, and their cars are very capable and worth keeping going for dozens of years. It is not like trying to get some clunker Plymouth or Chevy going. Every one of these cars is fully restorable short massive chassis damage or rust, and when fixed right, they are very enjoyable.

oh and a '73 Alfa Spider, just because...
