Subject: E46 tranny Q's

2000 328i - 108k miles. Im afraid of the tranny going out - How can I prevent this? Change the oil? Ive heard if the tranny oil is brown or has a burnt smell to it, changing it might actually speed the process of failure - hense dont change and put the $ towards the inevitable rebuilt tranny.

But, how can one get a sample of the tranny oil to inspect it? Any ideas? Thanks.

Also...at a cold start, when I go into 'D', there is a squeaking/chirping type noise. Go into 'N' it goes away. Go back into 'D' it returns. But let the card warm up a little and no noise at all. I wonder if this is due to low tranny oil? How to check the tranny oil level?

Lots of Q's - any help much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rob
