Subject: belt question

I just bought a 96 1.9 z3. The previous owner did not take care of it by any means! For the most part, I have it under control, but have ran into a snag - the belt system. The steering/water/altenator belt that is recommended does not fit (too big - and recommended by AutoZone). Through a series of trial and error, it seems that the belt is some strange in between size... or I'm threading it through the pulleys wrong. It didn't come with a manual and I have only had it two days, so... it's been fun! ha! Any suggestions or photos of the belt systems?
