This is a good question.

The DME will not always set the light if there is a code. This has to do with a priority level that the DME defines. If a code is not significant the light will not be set. In some cases the fault has to appear a number of times for the light to be set.

There is other important information that can be acquired other than the fault codes, like fuel trim adjustments values. Some of this info can be acquired by a high end OBDII machine. More sophisticated info needs a BMW specific machine.
