When I upgraded to SES (way back before BT was available for our cars), I thought I needed new buttons on my '99 750iL. I had both sets of buttons ready to install but after installing SES, I thought, "What the heck, I'll give it a shot" and ta-daa, the voice recognition worked great and has done so ever since.

I believe the buttons I have are the ones that came in the car in 1999 since (1) everything else in the car was the original version, (2) I bought the car in 2003 right after the car's warranty expired, and (3) I don't have the little face with voice waves button -- it's just the little phone icon.

But in any event I agree with Brian -- update the buttons and see what happens.
