If you missed my recent post I just became a reseller for PIE electronics who offers a DVD interface which will allow you to get DVD video on your factory Navigation. The module I used was from Precision Interface Electronics and is model number BMW-EYE1 DVD to Nav interface. It will work with all factory nav units in E38, E39, E46, and X5 BMW's on both 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 aspect. The AUX video has two channels, one for a backup camera that can be hooked up to turn on when the car is in reverse, and the other for an AUX for a device like a DVD player. I have my AUX audio channel tapped into the tape input since the use of cassette tapes is practically non existent. Info on this install can be found on www.e38.org in an article Edwin and myself wrote. I used a RCA splitter to allow for two AUX audio channels. I have my ipod on one channel and the DVD audio on the other channel. This way I can choose which audio source I want to listen to. I can play a DVD picture and listen to my ipod, or turn the ipod off and listen to the DVD audio.

So here is the module used, there are a few sources to get this modules. I sell the PIE interface, but others use NavTool, and there are other manufactures of similar devices that will get you the same effect.

start by pulling the Nav drive

pull out the blue nav harness and connect it to the connector provided with the Nav interface

Run the new connector into the nav frame.

Connect the new nav harness serial connector to the DVD interface box

Connect the ground wires and the power wires.

I tapped the rear harness by the tail light for the positive wire with ignition to power the unit so it will not turn on unless the the key is in the ignition in position 1.

Once everything is wired up connect a video source to test the unit, I used a household DVD player.

Turn on the car ignition and see if it works. The unit should be controlled by a switch. When you flip the switch on the AUX will override the nav screen. Tested- and it works!

once you are sure everything is working properly you can install your sound RCA wires from your DVD source to your AUX audio in.

I ran my RCA wires from the center console to the back seat where I have a portable DVD player to play my DVD's.

Once all the wires are installed and hidden you can wrap up your install and reinstall all the panels you removed.

Here are some youtube vids showing how everything works
