Mine was really gummy too. Stuck to my fingers when I removed it from the car. The windshield had been replaced and the A pillars and front of the headliner were suck in the urethane adhesive so I had to pull the material partially off.
I considered power tools but thought I'd give the wire brush a shot first... turned out to be the right choice. There was a little cleanup with a broom but the brush held most of the goopy material from the entire headliner.
