01/1988 E32 735i, cluster with grey backplate.

Symptoms:
Speedometer not working at all on 01/88 model 735i. Swapped a different cluster in from another 88 and the speedo works fine (but the gas gage is intermittent in the other cluster). All other instruments work fine in cluster.

Diagnosis:
Blown resistor on speedometer gage.

Repair:
1. Remove instrument cluster. See links under repair cluster capacitor if you need guidance.

Be sure to disconnect the battery and take appropriate precautions. I prefer removing the steering wheel as opposed to lowering the column.
2. Once the cluster is removed, separate front half of instrument from back half by separating at two plastic hinges and unplugging the connector with 2 wires (blue and white). If you are nervous about breaking the hinges, you can proceed without doing this task, it just is a little more difficult to work.
3. Remove the 6 screws holding the two cluster halves together.
4. The front will be stuck to the back along the metal brace. Carefully push the brace forward at tabs with a flat head screwdriver. The halves will separate.
5. The speedometer is held in place with two tabs and 4 metal pins. Carefully push out the speedometer and separate from the housing.
6. If yours is like mine, you will see a blown resister 33 Ohm. I scabbed another resister in place so I didn’t need to disassemble the gage any further.
7. Re-assemble and try it out.
