When you want to put the clutch plates back, you have to do it with the transmission body standing upright, i.e. the input shaft pointing up.
Torque spec for the many bolts holding the torque converter to the transmission body is 35 ft-lb. I had used 55 ft-lb and striped a bolt.
Even after you have changed the upper pan gasket, I urge you to consider either drilling that access opening to the rear corner 10-mm bolts, or simply not putting those two bolts in.
Lastly, here is a tip from Kirt Koeller, the ZF transmission specialist and also a great friend of BMW E32 boards. I asked back then but I'd never have a chance to replace that #12 O-ring. You can do it right now that your tranny is all accessible.
