Subject: 1986 528E 4HP22 Transmission problem

I have a 1986 528E that I recently purchased. It has a strange transmission problem. The tranny is a 4HP22. When it is stone cold, it shifts perfect (all 4 gears and lockup convertor), then drive 2 miles and the torque convertor unlocks. Drive 4 more miles and it will not shift past 3rd gear. Drive 5 more miles and it will not shift into 3rd gear until 60 mph and it will automatically kickdown into 2nd gear when letting off the throttle. Drive 10 more and it will not shift past 2nd gear. Basically the tranny works fine stone cold, but when it begins to warm up, the gears begin to disappear as the tranny gets hotter (the tranny does not overheat and the fluid looks good). It also has excessive kickdown when hot, not cold. I am a transmission guy but have never worked on a BMW unit. My guess would be the governor or throttle detent to elsewhere in the valvebody. Has anyone else had this problem or heard of it before? Better yet, does anyone know how to fix it? Is there a site where I can get a detailed view of the valve body? Also looking for a good gauge cluster for my 1986 528E.

Thanks,
Don
