I had this a while back in my '87 735i, asked around among some folks who did 'know' & ended up getting a relatively cheap, very easy, & high-qual result;-
1/ Firstly (after getting organised with a good motor-trimmer / auto-upholsterer) take the car to an auto-glass replacement specialist & have the REAR window removed.
2/ Leave the car with the upholsterer, who dismantles & removes the entire roof-trim OUT thru the rear window hole, puts the cardboard shell face-up in the workshop, & replaces the material with new/modern stuff that doesn't delaminate, & re-instals.
3/ Car goes back to glass shop & has the rear window replaced with a better seal than it had previously.
4/ Pay the guys.
Moral of story is ~ their is OFTEN a better/easier/cheaper result by just going to guys who can easily do what you need coz it IS what they DO do for a living!
