Saturday I went up to a paint shop looking for oxford green in a spray can. I talked to the guy there and told him what I was doing and how a few guys from my board have done the same project. He was hesitant about the paint sticking to chrome but recommended me to wet sand with 500 grit and to use a self etching primer. This was what I ended up with....

From left to right it is a clear coat, the self-etching primer, two cans of my oxford green and a can of liquid oxford for either another aerosol or as touch-up. Total cost for all that was $74. Not bad since touch-up alone from Bavarian Auto is about $20.

So I got to work! Came home Sunday afternoon and started on my test subject. This was the only chrome thing I had and it is the washer nozzle cover from our E32 which had broken and fallen off.

I wet sanded with the 500 and didnt do much and then hit it with some sprays of the self-etch primer and then left it in the sun for about 15 mins and when I came back it was bone dry. Gotta love this STL heat!

Next I sprayed it with the Oxford Green. Im not sure how man coats but enough to cover the whole thing. I went off to do lawn work and let it dry in the sun. Again it was dry in about 15 mins with this heat.

The final step was the clear coat. By now the sun had moved so when I left I forgot to put it in my sun spot but when I came back it was dry to the touch so we was cool. I missed some spots on the side but never went back to fix it up. Its interesting to see and feel the clear/non-clear parts.

When I first saw it in the shade didnt think too much but when I got it in the sun I was amazed at how well it came out. Pics dont do justice!

I took it out and compared it to the cars paint and was shocked out how good that clear coat was. Ive used clear before on my headlight project but wasnt impressed. Im guessing its the paint. Now that I have this Im going to re-do my fender fills.
Heres against the sun

And here is with the sun. I mean it looks OEM. I was shocked.

Here an indoor pic I took last night.

So Im confident in going at this now! Im going to remove as much chrome as I can. I found these two links last night and plan to use them. Front bumper doesnt look too bad.
Bumper and rear trim removal

While Ive got it off Im going to fix some scuffs like this one

David did an excellent write up for this and all I need to do is get some 2200 sand paper and some bumper spray.

So thats it for now! This week I need to decide which paint to use on the door and window chrome and to get the part number for those white clips since I am removing the chrome to install my new C pillar piece to repace my old crappy one! Any thoughts or comments I would love to hear them! I plan to do this on Saturday and Sunday so im hoping for nice and hot weather!
