covers in short:
ABS, DWA, brake light warning, central body electronics (ZKE), cruise control, door lock heating, electronic transmission control, injection electronics (DME), instrument cluster check control, interior light, OBC, memory mirrors, memory seat, power windows, start, sunroof.

Most of them are not required for the engine.

So the dangerous items to be checked are:
injection electronics (DME)
electronic transmission control
start (?)

Based on this theoretical stuff I would first check if the injectors work or not and if there comes fuel out of them.
That would be the start for you, I propose.
Think about such a way, how to systematically check the system.
Make a list
make a list of the data you should get, such as when checking the injectors how much Ohm etc.
Then check and compare.

Just a little bit thought for the start of your checking adventure.
If you are lucky, it might be a small thing only.
Even a MOTRONIC can be repaired or replaced, used ones are not that expensive, especially the ones for the version you and I have.
