If you do NOT have DSP, then you may need this amplifier: Bimmernav Amplifier

$45 at Bimmernav. I needed it in my E39 without DSP but did not need it in my E38 with DSP.

The amp simply plugs into the system in the back; it has a harness for your car's wiring. You can mount it with velcro for simplicity.

The amp is quite powerful and has a dial to set the volume to a comfortable level; then, the volume on the steering wheel can be used to make finer volume adjustments. For example, if the amp in the trunk goes from 0 to 11 (because all good amps go to 11), and you set it to 4, then the steering wheel +/- buttons can take you anywhere from, say, 2.5 to 5.5.

I have noticed a small amount of background hiss from the amp but it's not noticeable while in a call -- only when hearing the voice recognition system talk to me.
