Granted I don't have to highest ceilings in the world, but it definitely helps to have them out of the way. You could use a standard opener, but it will still require the opener to hang in the middle which will compromise at least a foot or more of prime real estate on the ceiling. With my bug on top, I have about a 6-inch extra clearance when I pull the 7 in. But that is plenty. If I had the traditional opener in, I would have to turn the bug around and push it all the way in so the open was at the hood in front. But once I sell the old openers, the cost of the 3800s will drop from ~335 shipped to ~235-250. The installer said the 3800s I got must have 'fallen off the back of the truck' because their company can't even get them for what I paid. =)

I agree as well that if the springs are done properly.. the door should feel like it weighs almost nothing. In fact, before the springs on mine relaxed a bit, it almost opened itself. It would make sense to me too that it should be 650 lbs of force.. but I would check to make sure.
