This is what I had to do-

to make an e24 wheel fit my e23 column. Both coarse splines, but the 82ish e24 wheel didn't push down enough over the "two" splined column. I swapped out a "single" splined shaft from an e28 into my e23 column. The car is in the garage now, going to do the heater core and some interior color changes.
