That homework assigned we can continue the class. Do not get to serious about wheels that do not fit perfectly. The hub adapter to allow the use of the E39 wheels and spacers to allow the use of wheels without the correct the are NOT your friend.

15 inch tires-cheap not actively being developed
16 common good choice for replacement to kinda like stock with performance tires available but getting harder to find in the 225-45-16 size
17 seems to be the way folks are going with tires available. Costs go up over 16s.
18 starting to get big. They can work but you need to know before you buy.
