David, since you are the monitor of the Nav software issues, I have some info and a couple of questions.

Recall that I have been working to remove my MK1 Nav and 4:3 monitor to replace with a MK4 and 16:9 monitor. I followed "Brian's" instructions from "Navigation & Radio Upgrade Summary E38 MKI to MKIV". I have a 1997 E39 540i.

Brian says you need to buy a new Nav connecting lead harness for MKIII & MKIV, p/n 61.12-6 907 840. I have ordered one of these and the price from the dealer is $130.00, however, the I did the following and the system works fine without this lead:

I removed the MKI, the video module and the Trimble GPS unit. I removed the interconnect cable that connects all these things together as the connectors on the back of the MKI are completely different than the MKIV. I then connected the GPS antenna that was connected to the Trimble to the back of the MKIV. Then, I connected the blue connector that was plugged in to the Video module in to the back of the MKIV. I then installed the 16:9 display in the dash using the same two connectors "blue and white" that were plugged in to the 4:3 display.

I then turned on the ignition, inserted a NAV CD and everything worked, even the split screen feature. No $130.00 connecting lead harness is needed. Plus, the back left side of my trunk is a lot lighter now and less messy looking.

I have nothing connected in to the red connector in the back of the MKIV.

Now for my questions:

1. What is the red connector used for in the back of the MKIV?
2. What is the -840 harness needed for?
3. My radio has a weather band, but it is not accessible from the 16:9 display. What can be done to be able to tune to the weather band feature?
4. I want to be able to display the 3-d map features of the newer navs and I understand the MKIV and 16:9 display can do that. What do I need to do or get for that?
5. When I go to the NAVTEQ site for the DVD map of the USA Canada, there are 3 versions available depending on what year BMW you say you have. I started with 2006/7 and moved backwards to 2004, all 5 series. Do you know if it matters which version I buy? I want the latest to ensure I get the 3d capability.
