Edwin, this is a very worthwhile project, the end result was awesome. I would reccommend taking the console out, it is the only way to do a really godo job. Removing the console is very easy, check e38.org, and if you need help I could talk you through it.

I used 3M swirl remover which is a very fine rubbing compound. I would imagine any kind of swirl remover would work. Then just use a small buffing wheel to buff it out repeatedly. I did it like 10 or 12 times, and the results were great. Better to air on the side of a very fine compound and do it a bunch of times, rather than using a heavier cut.

WARNING! The black plastic areas where you would push to open the panels, like the ash try, are painted. If you do not tape these off, the buffing will wear down paint, and expose the white underside. I learned the hard way. You can touch it up, but a little tape ahead of time will spare you this. When done, you should literally have a mirror surface.
