I know I know.
Rule #1 - NEVER below 1/2
Idea #1 - QT of water in trunk to unfreeze the outside.
If frozen, 5 min on top of engine works.
Erata#1 - NO idea when, probably when cold by I open one day and plastic parts broke. Gas door closes ok, and sometimes locks.
It it closes it is 100%. Not a lot go gas thieves via syphon going on.
My attach chichihuaahs might notice - and if I felt so inclined to protect a $40 tank of gas and if I got my pants on fast enough and if not 22 outside, and if I was awake, choice of tools would be 12gu with .45 as backup. Then again I would probably just go back to sleep cause ins was paid-up.

Suggestion is just to disable locking gas flap. Refill at 1/2, sleep well and Honestly guys - You never know when you gotta emergency go somewhere. 1/2+ works. e32'S are 15-17 avg.

Just a thought. A purist I am not. A realist maybe. I gas up when I think 1/2 tank, gauge is just verification. Varies but I figure 400 miles on a tank, so when my mentatl gymnatics say 200 or pass by a good price (Cosco works) fill the puppy up. Younger years I was not so sage. Ran out once on interstate, long story, but vowed never again. That experience was not worth the stress, action and delay
or cost vs a -1/2 stop to fillup. Plus the more gas the heavier the rear (for snow travel) plus the less water via condensation in the tank. Gas is hard to freeze. Hmm anti-freeze stuff. Fuel lines are waht 1/4 inch pipes. fuel-antifree stuff $3 for 4 oz, and same at drug store for 10 cents/oz. Given u are not at the north pole.

Just a thought.
