THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO POST ON "ECU" by Annie from the other board. I need to use this post to post pic. The post was here:

Here it goes:

Hello,

Some general info:

This is a classic example of "shotgun" approach (by even BMW dealer), replacing items one by one, costing hundreds of $ and problem still unsolved.

Anyway, here is the list from Chilton's: "ENGINE STARTS BUT THEN DIES"

1.Ignition system. Might want to check ignition coil itslef for proper resistance.

2. Air leak, check all rubber boots and vacuum hoses.

3. Fuel P regulator.
Check if the vacuum hose is OK.
If suspect too high a Fuel Pressure, slowly clamp intake hose with a vice grip around a towel to protect the fuel hose, increase the clamping slowly, if engine is better then FPR is bad
If Fuel is too low....actually engine will be difficult to start.

4. check cold-satrt valve, may be leaking:

5. Temp sensor. It is well-know that in general, connections go bad rather than the sensors themselves (true for any sensors). The fact that you live in Canada (?where) there is alot of salt in the winter, the salt corroded the connector. So remove the connector to the "TEMP SENSOR FOR MOTRONIC ECU" and give it a good clean with fine sand paper on BOTH the sensor side and the connector side.
Be careful not to break the plastic connector (after 20 years the plastic is brittle...):

6. Air Flow Meter. But check to be sure door inside AFM is moving FREELY.

PS: Leave the Air Flow Meter as a last resort.

7. Bad ground

8. Defective ECU (unlikely)

Link is here for rebuilding AFM, but I would leave this as alast resort.
